AZT Debuts as Cheaper Generic
The first drug for AIDS is now available as a generic. Introduced 18 years ago, zidovudine (Retrovir), also known as AZT, remains the mainstay of multiple drug strategies used to control HIV. The FDA ruling should help cut the cost of AIDS treatment, and lead to new efforts to combine AZT with other drugs in one easy-to-use pill.
